This was … good.

I hesitated to think it, but today had gone really well. It took me a second to get into things, but I thought I pulled off my paladin—no one was complaining, anyway. At least, not to my face. And Rue was relaxing around me. Talking to me, in and out of character. Helping me.

Best twenty bucks I’d ever spent.

I grabbed her sword for her when everyone started packing up, though it barely weighed anything, being made primarily of foam. “Let me walk you to your car.”

She glanced at me, her green eyes highlighted by the navy and violet glitter of her makeup. She dipped her head toward the parking lot and started walking. Another victory. I quickened my step to keep up, ignoring a scowl from—you guessed it—Cameron as I went.

Dude needed to relax.

“So I take it back,” I said when we reached asphalt.

“Which thing?” she asked. Her focus lingered on a red Nissan Pathfinder. It shouldn’t surprise me in the slightest that Rue drove a red car. It’d probably be pink if it was included in the dealership’s standard lineup.

“The LARPing thing, at the ice cream joint,” I clarified. “It’s actually pretty fun.”

“Of course it is.” Her lip ticked up a little. “You’ll come to learn that I’m right about most things.”

“Are you now?”

She opened her hatchback; there was an overstuffed plastic grocery bag full of other grocery bags inside, probably intended to be recycled, and a clear tote that looked to be full of sewing stuff, duct tape, and other knickknacks. She dropped her arm bracers in, and I slid the sword beside them. She merely cast me a knowing glare, and something about it made my chest tighten.

“Thanks for helping me out too,” I said.

She shrugged. “I hate seeing dumb animals suffer.” But she wasn’t able to fight the smile as much this time. Two dimples threatened to pop on her cheeks. The sight of it, with all her mermaidesque makeup, made her look like some sort of siren, beautiful and bizarre. Entrancing.

Okay, here went nothing.

“So,” I drummed my fingers on the side of her hatch, “do you want to go grab a drink or something?”

She glanced at me, dimples gone.

“My treat,” I amended.

“No, thanks.” Stepping away, she pressed the button to close the hatch. I leaned back to keep from being hit.

“Saturday plans?” I asked.

“Nope.” She dug through her satchel for keys.

I let out a breath as I ran my hand back through my hair. “I don’t suppose next week—”

“Nope.” She turned for the driver’s seat.

“Rue. Samantha.” I caught her wrist; she stopped, and I let go. I don’t know why I cared so much—if a woman wasn’t into me, she wasn’t into me. But something about Rue intrigued me—sparked something in a part of me I thought had died. I would never forgive myself if I gave up without a fight. “Listen, give me a chance. I’ll take you anywhere you want to go.” Her countenance only seemed to fall with every offer.
